Sacred Cod is ordered to be displayed.
March 17, 1784
General Court orders the carving displayed in the chambers of the House of Representatives. Initially a gift from John Rowe as “a memorial to the importance of cod fishing to the welfare of the Commonwealth,” the first version of the 4’x11’’ pine sculpture was destroyed by a fire in 1747 and the second disappeared during the Revolution War. This third version is moved to the House chambers in the New State House on 1/11/1798, then to the new House chambers in 1895. It is stolen by Harvard students but quickly recovered in 1933,* then stolen again but quickly found hidden within the State House in 1968.
